Handcrafted from premium bamboo these @101fins are up to 60% lighter than a fiberglass fin and they float! They are not a recreation of the past but a new take with increased performance compared to conventional fiberglass core fin. The unidirectional nature of bamboo results in a strong and stiff fin base while allowing the tip to flex naturally , with the flex coming more from the body of the fin rather than just at the tip. These fisherman’s rules of thumb seem to apply equally well to those of us fishing for lefts at our beloved local break. Yesterday ushered in a Club(e) quorum - no mean feat for a school day! - and lefts extending from Castelo Corner well beyond ’No Man’s Land’ into neighboring Matosas. Conditions to suit every riding style, and riding styles to suit a wide range of sleds today, from 7’6 and 8’6 Panacea Eggs from Josh Hall, to an 8’11 B3 Bonzer from Campbell Bros all the way to an 11’4 Glider by Panther… all of them with tri-fin templates, 101 Fins naturally. Neptune has been hard at work fashioning some splendid sandbars at our beloved rincón. It’s like he moved into Castelo do Queijo’s corner during the recent Atlantic storm and got to put his sculpting tools to work…well not on Saturday though :). But last Friday and Sunday dawn patrol sessions finally saw the frantic foam of recent days subside into glassy slopes, with the left so beloved by the Club(e) goofy footers standing up statuesque once again. Ideal conditions for assorted rides including : 6’8 tri fin and 7’6 2+1 Panacea Eggs from Josh Hall ,a 6’8 Cali Fish from Furrowsurfcrafts , a 6’10 Russ Short B3 from the Campbell Brothers and a 5’8 mini Simon’s by Bob Mitsven ! Dog days of August haven’t been particularly canine this year, with morning fog mostly making dawn patrols feel like winter. That’s when there were any patrols at all…. But Wednesday we got a summer swell with substance, and with it a sunrise that you could actually see! Lucky break for the skeleton crew trio still in Porto, while other Club(e) members explore points north and south, with varying degrees of success. Anything from Bonzer to Big Board conditions all along the length of Portugal (and into Galicia!). Sand bars are taking promising shape at PIP however. And Club(e) barista is back, with cold brew for a change!

Sunday Drivers. Dawn patrol at our home break with friends… what could be better on the day of rest? A rare thing these days no thanks to the harbor pier extension, but the summer swell got past the new wall just enough to give a few ankle- to knee-high peelers on Castelo’s sand bars! Logular conditions so we tried out the bigger bamboo fins on assorted rides and friends’ sleds … the crew got these out :9’9 grey Speed Demon / 9’6 Caramel Eagle / 9’5 Green Blunt nose! ‘How many fingers am I holding up?’… ‘Four! No, Six!’. It can be hard to tell when you play the lethal tequila standoff game as we did in celebration the other night. The correct answer is ‘D: All of the Above’! In June the Oporto Surfboard Club(e) celebrated its fourth year. And it now counts six members. In the four years it has been running, the Club(e) has gone from a duo to trio, quartet, and is now a sextet. And given the growing quiver of surfcraft, a veritable big band orchestra of board and break obsession!

: Once in a blue moon, perhaps a little more often, the Club(e) reaches quorum. Today was one of those days. Not the big band sound of the full sextet, but a quartet is where it gets interesting. With boards ranging from 9’6 Double Rainbow, a Tyler Warren 9’6 Scout Glider, a 9’11 Swamis all the way up to a 10’3 B3. And as with boards, a diversified portfolio of fins helps to maximize returns. Today’s array included a 10” G-IV, 7” Bonzer, 9.5” Dane Perlee custom template and 9.5” Performer fins, from our foilmaster of choice, Marlin at 101. We had to compete for beachfront real estate with graduating class revelers on today’s dawn patrol, which meant playing to a packed concert hall. Swingin’!

A school of flying fish is called a ‘glide’…. What do you call a school of glider aficionados? Maybe a ‘slide’...? On this particular Sunday, the first day of the week dedicated to sun worship, conditions came together for the Club(e) celebrants that turned out: sun and slopes! From a 9’6 Tyler Warren Scout Glider to an 11’ Eagle from Josh Hall, all the way up to 11’4 Glider from Panther, the vehicles of choice for the outing were all fine-tuned to trim. And trim we did! Even re-enacting some of the high-wire antics on land over a Sunday Roast from Pegasus Coffee. These boards have wings! In fact the big board gliders in the batch resemble aircraft wings outright, and give similar amounts of lift to rider and spirit at Praia Internacional de Porto aka Glidersville. And we nominate Zé as ‘wildlife photographer of the year’ for knowing these fantastic beasts and where to find them. Every time.

“These go to 11…”. It was just a duo for today’s early morning OSC jam session, but the music of the spheres was in full swing. Tide and time converged to bring us some sweet, sweet melody on the slopes this morning. The trim dial was turned all the way up with the 9’3 Speed Demon from Ospreysurfboards. And the Panther Glider, which in fact goes all the way up to 11’4. We’re still buzzing from today’s harmonic motion. Pump up the volume!P.S. there was still time and swell for a lunchtime intermezzo with the green 5’9 Campbell Brothers MBLV B3 … what a day at our home break!

Midlength Chronicles… Maiden Voyage/ Numerology Edition. We’re not big into numbers in the Club(e). Then again, there have been some recurring patterns.... not quite Fibonacci sequences, but definitely clusters of dedication and desire around particular lengths. Two crewmembers gravitate historically towards their ‘magic numbers’, 7’6” and 9’6”. It was only with the arrival of 8’6” boards , as we turned into a sextet, that the 1ft intervals revealed a spellbinding repetition. So much so that the latest addition to the Club(e) quiver was bound to default to the midpoint midlength: an Arenal Anomaly 8’6. R&D is ongoing, and different fin setups are bound to reveal further cabalistic ballistics!

Side note: Friday’s session was a good one and PIP provided the goods for the maiden voyage of our new 8’6! The 9’6 Double Rainbow scout glider was an obvious pairing…
